Marina Vaca Tinoco, 89, devoted wife, cherished mother, adored grandmother, beloved sister and aunt, and loving friend to many, passed away peacefully at her home on October 1, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Born on February 24, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Conrado Vaca and Maria Isabel Cortez, Marina was one of ten children. When she was one year old, her family relocated to Ixtlán, Michoacán, Mexico, before returning to Kansas City during her teenage years.
Above all, Marina considered her 40-year marriage to Joseph “Gabe” Tinoco and the family they built together to be her greatest accomplishment and proudest legacy. She was the devoted mother of seven children: Anthony, Teresa, Jeanette, Gabriel, Philip, James, and Edward. In later years, nothing brought her greater joy than being a grandmother to her 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, as well as to the many honorary children and grandchildren she loved just like her own. She cared for them regularly, delighted in their everyday lives, and surrounded them with unconditional love. They adored their grandma, and she treasured every moment with them.
Marina’s faith was expressed not only through prayer, but also through the kindness and steady care she showed to others. She had a special gift for making people feel remembered, welcomed, and cared for. A homemaker by vocation, she also devoted countless hours to caring for nieces, nephews, and neighborhood children. Beth and Cara, two very special neighborhood girls, became like family to her—a testament to the way Marina opened her heart and made others feel that they belonged.
Her home was an extension of the love she shared with everyone who entered. She made sure guests were abundantly fed and rarely allowed anyone to leave without a full heart and food to take home. Whether caring for a child, visiting with her sisters, sharing a laugh over bingo, or simply making someone feel loved, Marina left a lasting impression on the lives of those around her.
Marina’s life was filled with laughter, friendship, and, as many will fondly remember, an abundance of bingo winnings at the Guadalupe Center’s Senior Citizen Program, where she was one of its longest-active participants. She treasured the friendships she formed there and looked forward to the time she spent with those she had come to know and love.
Marina also had a special affection for her plants, flowers, birds, and novellas. She found joy in the simple things around her and in the everyday moments that brought comfort, beauty, and companionship.
Marina was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gabe; her sons, Jimmy, Gabriel, and Eddie, whom she missed deeply every day since their passing; her parents; and her siblings, Conrad, Jesus, Ramon, Epifanio, Rigoberto, Miguel, and Consuelo.
She is survived by her children, Anthony (Roseanna), Teresa Valdivia (Robert), Jeanette Hernandez (Miguel), and Philip; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Paula Tinoco and Anita Esparza (Bibiano); and countless nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who were blessed to know her.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m., with the Rosary prayed at 6:00 p.m., at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, Missouri. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart-Guadalupe Parish, 2544 Madison Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family may also visit from 9:00–11:00 a.m. at the church prior to Mass. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 1150 N. 38th Street, Kansas City, Kansas.
Marina will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the friendships she nurtured, the faith she carried throughout her life, and the love she so generously shared with others. She leaves behind not only beautiful memories, but also the lasting example of a woman who made everyone around her feel loved, welcomed, and at home.
