Marjorie Lou Carl Girton, 96 years old, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, August 2, 2024 at Colonial Village in Overland Park, Kansas. She showed us how to live, following Jesus with all her heart, and she showed us how to die, resting in Jesus' arms.
Margie was born on February 9, 1928 in Taylor, Michigan to Allen and Loretta Carl. She was little sister to Jean Lamond, who preceded her to heaven. She and Jean used to walk a mile to their 1-room schoolhouse. Her dad taught her to shoot (rifles and bows), fish, and camp; she loved being in nature.
She attended Michigan State University, where she was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority and the National Honor Society, and highly enjoyed socializing. Upon graduating, she worked mainly as an Elementary School teacher, where she touched many children's lives.
In 1945, Lawrence E. Girton came to her home in his army uniform and captured her heart. They were married on July 29, 1950. Together for 48 years, Margie and Larry raised their three children Kent, Karen and Kevin in several locales, settling in Kansas City for the second time in 1968. There she remained for 52 years, also raising two granddaughters, Christina and Kathy. Much of her yard became a garden, where she loved to work. She always felt closer to God there.
Born and raised a Methodist, her faith was greatly deepened by Marriage Encounter, Cursillo and Bible Study Fellowship. She also had a wonderful community in the Colonial Presbyterian Prime Timers group, serving in several roles including President.
She loved people, especially her family, was quick to laugh, and loved hugs. She loved to travel and she loved life at home with her family. She was always concerned for others, whether it was buying a winter coat for a poor child in her classroom, or asking her son if he wanted a more comfortable chair on her last conscious day on earth. She was an example to us all and lived what she believed.
She was preceded to heaven by: Her husband, Larry; daughter, Karen Norman Perez; sister, Jean Lamond. She is survived by her two sons, Kent Girton (& spouse, Pam); Kevin Girton (& spouse, Julie); Grandchildren: (Kent) - Justin, Loran, Zach; (Karen) - Christina, Kathy; (Kevin) Joshua, Katie, Jonathan, Mary. 5 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 9 at Colonial Presbyterian Church, 12501 West 137th Street, Overland Park, KS 66221. Visitation with the family will be at 10:00am, and the service at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers, checks can be sent to Colonial Village, 12500 West 137th Street, Overland Park, KS 66221. and/or Colonial Presbyterian Church - Missions, 9500 Wornall Road, KCMO, 64114.
