

Martha Ann Horn, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away, January 2nd, 2012, at the age of 90. Born on February 22nd, 1922, she was the daughter of the late John and Alta Victor Barclay of Mexico, Missouri, and was preceded in death by her younger sister Marilyn in1934. After graduating from Mexico High School in 1940, Martha Ann first attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri, transferred to the University of Missouri, Columbia, graduating in 1944. At the University of Missouri, she was a member if the Tri Delta Sorority and also a member of Phi Chi Theta, Women's Business and Professional Sorority. Martha Ann held several jobs after college, one of which took her to Hawaii to work for the Hawaii Farm and Home Magazine. She grew to love Hawaii, and in later years would return to the islands with family each winter. After working with the Jackson County Medical Society in Kansas City, Martha Ann married the late Elford Wade Horn, an engineer for Amoco Oil, on October 15, 1949. Martha Ann and Wade had four sons, all born in Kansas City, Missouri before being transferred to Newport News, Virginia, in 1964. In1973, Amoco Oil transferred the Horn family, to Munster, Indiana, where they lived until Wade's retirement in 1982. After retirement, Wade accepted a consulting position in Saudi Arabia with United Oil Products. Martha Ann and Wade took full advantage of being overseas and traveled to many memorable places in Asia, Africa and Europe. Upon returning from Saudi Arabia, Martha Ann and Wade returned to Kansas City and settled in Leawood, Kansas, fully enjoying the benefits of retirement, as well as their growing family. Martha Ann took up golf and developed a great zest for the game and she was often seen walking the course late into her 80's. She was an avid bridge player and a tireless University of Missouri booster and football fan, hosting many bridge and football parties. When Wade flew his Cessna airplane to visit friends and family, Martha Ann became his steady co-pilot and navigator. She loved flowers, gardening, and cats and was a past president of the Leawood Welcomer's Club and a member of the Leawood Women's Club. Children and grandchildren marveled at her indomitable spirit, independence and tireless energy. She is survived by her four sons and their families: Warren (Jane) of Athens, Georgia, and their sons Christopher and Thomas; Wesley (Lori) of Denver, Colorado, and their daughters, Evelyn and Haley; Robert (Susan) of Chicago, Illinois, and their son, Trevor; Richard (Wendy) of Indianapolis, Indiana, and their son Mitchell. We will miss her very much. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday, January 4th, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, followed by graveside service at 10:30 a.m. in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Celebration of Life will be held at The Forum, 3501 West 95th Street, at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 4th.
