Marvin Johnson

Marv was born on June 19, 1940, in Lynch, Nebraska, to Milton and LaVerne Johnson. He grew up in South Dakota, first in Sioux Falls and later in Wakonda, where he excelled in school activities and was a standout athlete at Wakonda High School, earning all-city and all-state honors in three sports.

Marv attended the University of South Dakota, earning a degree in political science. He spent his summers working as a livestock buyer and was able to save $1,000 each summer to cover tuition and spending money for the following school year. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he became known as “The Fox.” The nickname remained with him throughout his life.

After graduation, Marv moved to Washington, D.C., on paper to pursue a career, but in truth to continue pursuing a pretty girl from Sioux Falls. It was also during this time that Marv was called to serve his country. Marv married Mary Susan Eggers on May 6, 1967. They were living at Fort Carson, Colorado, when he received his orders for Vietnam. Marv proudly served as an officer in the United States Army and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

After completing his military service, Marv and Susan made their home in Washington, D.C., where he was employed by the General Services Administration (GSA). In 1972, they moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where Marv continued his career with GSA. He spent his career there, serving as a mentor to many, and retired as Director of Personnel.

In retirement, Marv enjoyed golf, fishing, and hunting, as well as the camaraderie that came with them. He took great pride in his house and yard and was never happier than when he was home with family and friends.

Marv and Susan had three children: Ellen, Joan, and Erik. He was the proud Poppy of five grandchildren: Jane, Mary, Katherine, Jack, and Matthew. Marv had a deep connection with each of his children and grandchildren, and their lives and accomplishments were a great source of pride.

Marv lived life with a sense of fun and dedication to whatever he was doing. He had a natural gift with people, and his perspective and presence were always appreciated. We will miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Milton and LaVerne Johnson; and his sister, Carol Lynn Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susan; his children, Ellen (David) Burkhead, Joan Ryan, and Erik Johnson; and his grandchildren, Mary and Matthew Burkhead and Jane, Katherine, and Jack Ryan, all of Overland Park, Kansas. He is also survived by his sister, Marlene Larsen of Yankton, South Dakota; his brother, Burdette (Barbara) Johnson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his sister-in-law, Barbara Wylde of St. Paul, Minnesota; his brother-in-law, Dick McClean of Moline, Illinois; and his 11 nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Marv’s life on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Moriah Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
