She was born on February 18th, 1941, to Cecil and Lucile Shepherd. She resided in Fort Smith, Arkansas until moving to Kansas City and working for Yellow Freight in the Revenue Accounting department.
Mary Nell was a loving mother to her two daughters. She worked hard as a single parent to provide for them. Being a grandmother brought her great joy, and she was happiest when surrounded by her family. Some of the family members lovingly referred to her as “G”. She was an optimist who always offered her encouragement, support, and a listening ear. Mary Nell’s family will always remember and cherish her calling on their birthday and singing Happy Birthday, which always ended with “and many many more.” Her family always knew she was thinking of them when she would call eager to share any tidbits of information that she learned that would be of value to them.
Mary Nell loved being outside, whether she was working in the yard, taking a walk around the block, or admiring birds. She was an avid animal lover and provided a caring home to many cats and dogs over the years. Mary Nell loved her Kansas City Chiefs.
Mary Nell displayed great strength and admirable courage throughout her life, but especially during her long battle with cancer, which she overcame with unwavering faith. She was well-liked by many as she was such an incredible person. Her constant love and support will be missed, along with her infectious laugh and lighthearted humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Lucile Shepherd, and her brother, Cecil Hoyt.
Mary Nell is survived by her two daughters Nicole (Mike) Hughes and Lisa Hiesberger, four grandchildren Lauren (Zac) Huffman, Connor Hughes, Caitlin Hiesberger, and Chase Hughes, and two great-grandchildren Harper and Hadley Huffman.
