She was born on July 31, 1934 to Mariah Obediah Hickerson and Nannie Mae (Cross) Hickerson. She grew up in Parma, Missouri with her two brothers, Bert and Henry “Jack”, and two sisters, Darlene and Lula Mae.
She graduated High School in 1953.
After working for the Missouri Department of Welfare, she left the “bootheel” area of Missouri in 1954 to pursue what would become her life’s profession – Nursing.
She attended General Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City on a full scholarship, graduating from the program in 1957. She met Lloyd L. Crosby in 1958 and they married in 1959. She would have celebrated her 67th wedding anniversary with Lloyd this coming January 3rd.
She was the mother of three children: Philip David, Stephen Lloyd and Paul-Michael.
She had a diverse career in Nursing. Working in the offices of Dr. Samuelson, Dr. Milton Ozar, Dr. Damon Mountford and Dr. Rebecca Turner. But her true calling were the years she worked nights at Menorah Medical Center, Research Medical Center, St. Mary’s and St. Joseph Hospital in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She also spent some time volunteering as the School Nurse at St. Regis while her children attended in the 1970’s.
She believed strongly in education. She was on the School Board of Archbishop O’Hara High School. It did not matter whether that was a college degree or vocational training. She was just as proud of Stephen’s choice of being a Mechanic as Paul’s choice of being a Pharmacist.
She made an attempt at retiring in the late 90’s. After going back to work, she finally retired in 2000. What she referred to as “hanging up her Nursing Cap.”
Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Lloyd, and son, Paul-Michael. Her grandchildren, Daniel, Amy and David; great grandchildren; her sister, Lula Mae; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two of her sons, Philip and Stephen.
