Just as she was always the last to sit at every family get together, Mary Jean (McCutcheon) Lane was also the last of ten children to run to her heavenly home. Mary Lane, age 86, of Kansas City, MO, passed from this life on April 19, 2026. In her final days she was surrounded by her loving family and a close, unwavering friend.
Mary was born on January 28, 1940, in Cave Creek, Arkansas to Frank and Madgie (Hefley) McCutcheon. She attended Mt. Judea School where her bouncing pigtails on the playground caught the eye of a boy who would one day sweep her off her feet and take her to the big city. On June 1, 1958, Cecil and Mary Lane united in marriage. They made their home in Kansas City, MO, where Mary was a homemaker for many years and together raised their only son, Eddie.
Mary was known for kindness, love, and generosity. She loved hosting bridal and baby showers in her home, as well as Bible studies and family dinners. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Vivion Road Church of Christ for more than 50 years and could probably outcook anyone in a good old potluck. Mary also had a passion for gardening. There wasn't anything she couldn't grow, and she took a lot of pride in the vibrant colors painted across her yard. She enjoyed putting together puzzles, bird watching, and sitting on the patio. Her greatest love though, was her family. Her family gave her the affectionate names of Sis, Mom, Grandma, Granny, and Aunt Mary. She was the biggest cheerleader not only in Mt. Judea, but for her family. She was present for it all: graduations, births, surgeries, weddings, performances, recitals, games, and much more. Also, if you needed a snack during any one of these, she had those in her purse.
Mary is survived by her husband, Cecil Lane of Kansas City, MO; her son, Eddie Lane (Donna) of Smithville, MO; 3 grandchildren, Melissa (Lane) Franklin (Jason) of Pleasant Hill, MO; Donny Lane (Karen) of Smithville, MO; and Josh Lane (Kaley) of Kansas City, MO; 7 great-grandchildren, Madison Franklin, John Franklin, Makenna Franklin, Sawyer Lane, Harrison Lane, Flynn Lane, and Ryker Lane.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Madgie and her nine siblings Laura, Kathleen, Bobbie, Doyl, Jimmie, Lavoyd, Gerald, Vearl, and Will.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 5:00 p.m .- 6:30 p.m. with a funeral following at 6:30 p.m. at The McGilley Antioch Chapel, 3325 NE Vivion Rd, Kansas City, MO 64119. A Graveside Service will be held at Mt. Judea Cemetery in Mt. Judea, Arkansas on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association in Mary's memory.
A life well lived and a legacy that will continue for generations.
