Mary was born on July 30, 1942, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Francis Joseph and Dorothy Agnes (Young) Vercelline. Following graduation from high school, Mary moved to Minneapolis where she worked in early computer key punch technology for an insurance company. A few years later, Mary moved to Monrovia, California, where she continued this work and met the love of her life, John Joseph Scammacca, Jr.
John and Mary married on May 8, 1965, in Monrovia, California and moved to Missouri in 1967 where they raised seven children. John and Mary continued to be involved in computer software development and started Compu-Technical Research, Inc. in 1977. John and Mary were married for 44 years, until John’s death in 2009.
Mary’s life was filled with family, friends and music. In addition to caring for her husband and seven children, Mary was primary caregiver for her parents in their later years. Mary had a gift for music which she lovingly shared with those around her. She served as a music minister or liturgist for more than 40 years in churches in the Kansas City area – first at St. Regis beginning in 1973, Our Lady of the Presentation in 1977, and simultaneously at St. Sabina and St. Matthew. After Mary’s children were grown, she returned to school to pursue a music degree, but she was again called to music ministry and left school in 2002, to work for St. Bernadette Catholic Church, retiring in 2014 after 12 years.
Following her retirement, Mary moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to live near her daughter Victoria and her family. During the last days of her life, Mary received loving care from the staff at Josie Harper Hospice House.
Mary’s children will forever cherish the memories of their mother and appreciate the many sacrifices she made for her family. Mary is survived by three daughters, Laura and Tim Schmitt, of Sioux City, Iowa; Victoria and Chris Verdoni, of Papillion, Nebraska, Patricia and Bill Allyn, of Kearney, Missouri; four sons, John and Lori Scammacca, of Garden City, Missouri; Michael and Tisha Scammacca, of Raymore, Missouri; Charles Scammacca and Gabe Cohen, of Raytown, Missouri; and Mark Scammacca, of Raytown, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Truman and Turner Schmitt; Nick, Alex, Sam and Anna Kate Verdoni; Isabella Allyn; Lexi and Ava Scammacca; and Hayden and Cole Scammacca; and one sister, ICM Kathryn Vercelline, of Rome, Italy. Mary was a great support to me when I was a young associate pastor at Our Lady of Presentation Parish. I enjoyed many good meals thanks to her culinary talents. She made the rectory a lot more livable. I will hold her and her family in grateful prayer until we meet again in God's good time.
