Mary Sue Shalberg, 75, passed to be with her Heavenly Father on October 29, 2021. Born August 5, 1946, in Norfolk, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Charles and Arlene Cherny, sister of Dave, Larry, and Judi.
Mary Sue grew up in the small farming town of Stanton, Nebraska where she and her siblings enjoyed the comforts of small town life. School was two blocks away and grandma and grandpa lived on the other side of town, a 10 minute bike ride. The family shares vivid memories of playing on the farm and eating home cooked meals at grandma and grandpa’s. It was important to her parents, Charles and Arlene, that their children were involved in various activities and played an active role in the community. Mary Sue loved tap dancing in nearby Norfolk and was active in 4H. Like her mom, she played the piano and had a love for sewing. She played the French horn in high school and twirled the baton for the marching band. Mary Sue was runner up for Miss Stanton County in 1962. After graduating from Stanton High in 1964, Mary Sue attended one year at Nebraska Wesleyan College and one year at the University of Nebraska.
In December of 1965, she married the love of her life, Bruce Shalberg. Mary Sue and Bruce resided in Shawnee and Leawood Kansas where they raised two daughters, Tiffany and Tori. She treasured making their house a home and took joy in being a homemaker. Mary Sue loved the Lord and enjoyed bible studies with her sisters in Christ. She had a passion for gardening and created stunning landscapes at each home they lived. Mary Sue loved to travel with family and friends, she considered it a blessing to see the world with her husband of 55 years. Five years ago, Mary Sue and Bruce took residency in Naples, Florida but continued to live in the Village of Loch Lloyd, Missouri in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Mary Sue is predeceased by her father, Charles Cherny, mother, Arlene Cherny, and nephew, Joel Cherny. Surviving in addition to her husband Bruce Shalberg, are daughters Tiffany and Torin Shalberg of Overland Park, grandchildren, Blake and Christian Shalberg, brother, David Cherny and wife Candy of Fremont, Nebraska, brother, Larry Cherny of Green River, Wyoming, and sister, Judith Blood of Morgan City, Louisiana, sister-in-law, Bonnie and Jerry Herbolshimer (MN), sister-in-law, Linda and Daryl Kent (OK), brother-in-law Tom and Jennifer Shalberg (MO), and many nieces and nephews.
