Mary was born January 21, 1951 in McCrory, Arkansas to R.T. Slaughter Sr. and Mattie Jo Slaughter. When she was born, she was introduced to her eldest brother Eddie, “This is your “Babysister” and from that day on, he introduced her to everybody as his “Babysister” and that’s her nickname by close family and friends. She left a lasting impression on those she encountered which includes her student’s, family and friends.
She was always a knowledge seeker and after graduating from Central High School in 1970 she earned a degree in Education from Avila College. She later went on to pursue a career in Education in the Kansas City Mo. School District. Mary taught for forty years until she retired, however, continued to be an educator volunteering for the Lead to Read program and tutored privately. One of her favorite activities was getting together for lunch with former colleagues from Knotts Elementary School who they affectionately called themselves “Mixed Knotts Nuts”, this was a luncheon group who met at Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant for ten years.
She was married to Richard Vincent for 32 years, (who proceeded her in death) although they didn’t have children of their own Mary had several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews who all called her “Babysister”. Even Mary’s students were treated as her very own children. Mary loved her family nieces and nephews she wanted all of them to be successful and not limit themselves.
Mary’s love of the Lord was expressed through the many ministries she participated in at Emmanuel Church. She taught the Discipleship Class and active in the Scholarship, Hostess, and Hospitality, Committees also Welcome and Event Teams. For many years President of the Drama department and a member of the Keepers of God’s Word Bible Study Hour class.
Mary Louise Vincent’s life is celebrated by Mother Mattie Jo Slaughter 7 brothers, Eddie Slaughter(Rochelle), R.T. Slaughter Jr.(Theresa)(R.T. preceded her in death), Larry Slaughter, Robert T. Slaughter, Clifford Slaughter, Christopher Slaughter(Kim), Dallas Slaughter(Julie) and one sister Jewel Roberts(Alfred) and a host of nieces, nephews cousins, and friends.
A Visitation will take place from 9:30am to 11:00am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00am on Saturday, June 30 at Emmanuel Church, 920 Olive Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64127. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery South, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.
