Mason graduated from Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, KS, after a challenging year of mask mandates and social distancing. During that time, he was a member of both the soccer and tennis teams.
After High School, Mason attended Johnson County Community College where he took course work, including classes in Japanese culture. He developed a passion for the language and was looking forward to accompanying his sister to Japan for her senior trip next year.
At the time of his death, Mason worked as a server at YaYa's in Overland Park. He was exceptional at his job and was loved by both customers and co-workers. As a family, we'd often stop in just to see him in action as he was quite skilled in menu and wine suggestions.
He was an avid gamer and a deep thinker with a creative mind. Mason could hold conversations on any topic. And because he was such a deep thinker, he was resourceful; making it easy for him to draw upon his knowledge to contribute effortlessly to any subject area.
Mason was preceded in death by his grandfather, Russell G. Whittaker Sr. He is survived by his mother, Rhonda Epps-Haas, and father, Edward Epps; step-father, Mark Haas, and step-mother, Janeen Morgan-Epps; his paternal grandparents, Eddie Lee and Evelyn Epps; maternal grandmother, Etta K. Whittaker; and two sisters, Payton and Rowan Epps, along with a multitude of family and friends that loved him immensely.
Mason was our light in this dark world. It's beyond our ability to understand how we're expected to navigate this life without him. Our hearts are forever broken. We will cherish the memories we have of him in hopes that those memories will help in the healing process.
Thank you, Mason, for being our son, our brother, our grandson and a friend. You will be missed.
