Megan Jo McAnany, 40, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 21, 1986, Megan lived a life that was vibrant, unforgettable, and deeply rooted in the people she loved most.
Megan was intelligent, witty, compassionate, and unapologetically herself. She had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed, and loved. Whether through her humor, her storytelling, her music, or simply her presence, Megan left an impression that will never fade from the hearts of those who knew her.
She graduated from St. Teresa's Academy and later attended Kansas State University before earning her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Megan had a love for words, connection, and conversation that carried throughout every stage of her life.
Megan was known for the little things that made her uniquely her - her love of music, her sharp sense of humor, her obsession with crosswords, and her unwavering belief that ranch belonged on just about everything. Those who loved her will forever think of her when they see a crossword puzzle, hear one of her songs, or reach for an extra side of ranch.
Among Megan’s greatest gifts in life was Lylah Botsford, who held a deeply special place in her heart.
Megan is survived by her loving mother, Joni Gracheck; her father, Michael McAnany and his wife, Carol; her grandfather, Jim Martin; her partner, Chris Vardeman; her sister, Devon Hickey and husband, James Hickey, along with their children: Frank, Walter, and Eleanor; her sister Morgan Niebuhr and husband, Brett Niebuhr, along with their children: Jewel, Conrad, and Birdie; and her brother, Chase McAnany. She also leaves behind Kristen Mosier, Morgan’s mother and Megan’s former stepmother, as well as Tammy Fruits, Chase’s mother and Megan’s former stepmother, both of whom remained meaningful parts of Megan’s life. Megan is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends who meant so much to her throughout her life.
Megan was preceded in death by her stepfather, Jim Gracheck; and her grandmother, Beverly Martin.
Megan will be remembered for her fierce love, her unforgettable spirit, her sense of humor, and the way she made ordinary moments feel special. Her absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled, but her love and memory will continue to live on through her family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Memorial contributions may be given in her memory to Wayside Waifs or KC Pet Project.
Celebration of Life will be held this Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 2:00 PM at 9875 Kill Creek Road in De Soto, KS 66018.
