Melanie Harkins, 45, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away March 27, 2013. Melanie was born on September 13, 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Richard and Marilyn Harkins. Melanie graduated from Hickman Mills High School in 1985. She continued her education at the University of Missouri, Central Missouri State University and the University of Oklahoma. She received her Master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Oklahoma in 1992. She was a child therapist for many years. Melanie loved to listen to music, travel and have fun. Two of her favorite destinations were Las Vegas and Maui. She loved sports and was an avid OU fan. She always cheered for the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Harkins, and her brother, Scott Harkins. Survivors include her mother, Marilyn Harkins and her brother, Chris Harkins, both of Raymore, Missouri, her niece and nephews, Alisha, Nathan, Jeremy and Alex, and many other loving family members and friends. She also leaves behind her beloved dogs, Toto and Milo. Melanie chose to be a donor. Through her generous gift, she is helping many people and also giving someone the gift of sight. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1111 West Foxwood Drive, Raymore, Missouri. Burial will follow services at Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Marilyn and Chris,
I have a special place in my heart for Melanie and have wonderful memories of her and our times in Vegas. I always think of Melanie whenever I see something about the Wizard of Oz and University of Oklahoma! She was such a generous person with a huge heart and I am so sorry for your loss.

Though we didn't stay in touch after graduation, Mel was always a part of my life growing up. I remember her always having a smile and making people laugh. Such a loss to all who knew her.

Very sorry for the loss of such a beautiful individual in many different ways, Mel had such an impact on so many people.
