Michael “Mickey” Lee Lewin, 77, Leawood, Kansas, passed away August 16, 2012. Mickey was born December 16, 1934 in Denver, Colorado. Samuel and Elaine (Nowick) Lewin’s love glistened in their son, and they preceded him in death. Mickey attended MU on a full track & field scholarship, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Delta. Mickey cherished his late wife of 42 years, Janet Eve Lewin. Together they founded Mr. Morts, a delicious crowd-pleasing deli in Kansas City, Missouri. Mickey then set foot in the family business, George’s Loan office. First-class, kindhearted service prevailed and he was respectfully regarded as Mr. George! Mickey’s sportsmanship virtues touched many lives while coaching football, baseball and basketball. His time and talents were shared on and off the field. Mickey’s passions included family, friends, painting contemporary pieces, horses, cars, and all sports. He found much enjoyment swimming with his friends at Village Shalom. Cowboy boots, jokes along with German Shepherds were always a part of papa! Mickey’s innate spirit always made him a crowd favorite. He truly reached out and touched people. His happy go-lucky ways and tales will be retold by those loved ones he leaves behind. Uncle and best friend, Manuel Nowick and Barbara Nowick; sister and brother-in-law Harry and Marcia Berlau, their children John Berlau and fiancée Candice, Eric, Nancy, Kaitlyn and Carter Batdorf; son and daughter-in-law Joel and Melissa Lewin, their children Josie and Macey Lewin; and daughter and son-in-law Jodi and Jamie Kaplan, their children Jacqueline, Joseph and Jeannavieve. A special thanks to Kevin Kleweno, Cheryl and Junior Hernandez. Mickey also loved his cat Crispy Crème and of course the real donuts too. Services will be held 4:30 p.m. Sunday, August 19, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., followed by graveside in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope House, PO Box 577, Lee’s Summit, Missouri 64063 and/or State Line Animal Hospital, 2009 W. 104th Street, Leawood, Kansas 66206.
