Micki McKinnon Christian joyfully surrendered to the Lord on Friday, January 28, 2022 surrounded by her loving family singing and praying her into heaven after a brief, courageous battle with COVID pneumonia. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, February 4th at 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village 66208. Rosary will be at 10 a.m. preceding the Mass. Win or lose, Micki was a raging Chiefs fan and requested friends and family to display their Chiefs spirit at the service.
Micki was born November 17, 1942 to Eleanor and Jim McKinnon in Canton, OH. She had a happy childhood in the Detroit, MI area as the oldest of four children. Micki met and married the love of her life, Kenneth Paul Christian in 1963 while they were both students at Loyola University, Chicago. After graduating in 1965, they moved to Kansas City. Between 1964 and 1969 they were blessed with four sons. Micki’s early volunteer activities revolved around her boys’ school, sports and community as well as her tenured, successful career with Ocean Pacific. Ken often commented that he and Micki had lived “big” lives from the time they married while still in college to enjoying their six grandchildren.
Micki loved reading, the KC Chiefs, golf, animal print, the Novel Women book club, and Mahjong. She was a master gardener by our account, the queen of one liners and the best neighbor and friend to many. Through the years, she and Ken were members of Homestead Country Club, Indian Hills Country Club and Ancala Country Club in Arizona. Spending the winter months in Arizona for 20 years, their friends from Eagle Mountain became a special part of Micki and Ken’s lives. The last year of her life was filled with laughter and love being an integral part of the frenetic energy living with Matt and Kristen’s family. She loved to share a glass of wine in her new “palace” and playing card games with her grandkids.
Micki was a devoted member of the St. Ann community for 50 years and was a founding member of the 9:15 community. Her entire adult life was spent lighting souls on fire for Jesus Christ. Hundreds of people have had the honor of participating in her life-changing bible studies and retreats, many of which she designed and wrote herself (to name a few: Soul Sisters, Bible Babes, God’s Girlfriends, God’s Girls in AZ, FROGS, Marthas & Marys, STA Evening, COR girls, Mission Pines, CHRP, Women’s Retreat). She truly led her life by example, as a devout disciple of Christ. Her natural way of unabashedly sharing her faith to every person she encountered is a testament to her deep and pure devotion to leading others to the Lord.
Every Christmas Micki gifted her loved ones with gratitude journals along with specific instructions to practice gratitude daily. Her word of the year for 2022 was ‘Longing’, we now know that Micki was longing to go home. She said, “I don’t want people to think their prayer requests went unanswered. God always answers our prayers, even if it’s not the answer we are looking for”. With her youngest Grandson in her arms in her hospital bed, she trusted God’s will and bravely told us, “I am not afraid.”
Micki is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ken, her parents, son, Brian and brother-in-law, Terry Christian. She is survived by her son Kenneth III (Annette) and grandson, Kenneth IV; son Ben (Liz) and granddaughter, Alex (Luke); Tracy Christian; her son Matthew (Kristen) and grandchildren Brian, Kala, Karly and McKinnon. She is also survived by her sister Judy (Chuck) with nieces and nephews Tim (Jenny), Cheryl, Meredith (Chad); her sister Dee (Ron) with nieces and nephews Molly (Kurt), Kyle, Jamie (Abby); her brother Dave (Nancy) with nieces and nephews Kristen (Chris), Jill (James). She is also survived by her brother in-law John Creighton, sister-in-law Renny (Mark) Arensberg with nieces and nephews Mark (Katie), Elise (Casey), Briana (Cameron) and Annmarie and sister-in-law Debbie and nieces Carrie (Friedrich) and Kyle (TJ).
We know Micki is joyfully hugging many of her dearly departed loved ones in heaven and wrapping Brian and Ken in long-awaited bear hugs. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Advent Health for their loving, compassionate and knowledgeable care. Inspired by her love for the Chiefs, those who loved her are encouraged to contribute $13 memorial donations to the St. Ann’s Angel Fund in care of St. Ann Catholic Church, 7231 Mission Road, Prairie Village, KS, 66208.
