Morris was born on September 17, 1933, on a farm near Butler, Missouri. At the age of 7, his mother moved Morris and his two brothers to Independence, Missouri, where he graduated from William Chrisman High School. While there, he lettered in track and later secured a track scholarship to the University of Missouri. After graduation, he and one other man built a small two-bedroom house for his mother. Soon after, Morris was drafted into the US Army and served two years at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Upon completing his service, he worked for Cities Service Oil Company in Kansas City, Missouri, where he met his wife, Reba, when she came to work there a few months later. Later, Morris went to work for Armco Steel Company in their Sales office. Morris and Reba were married on September 23, 1961 and together had two children, Michelle and Scott, who were his joy. He loved going to their athletic events, dance performances, and whatever else they were involved in—he was always there. Beyond his family, Morris was active in the Independence community, serving as a member of the Independence Jaycees and coaching a youth track team that he took to a national meet in Minnesota. Morris and Reba were also active in local government, and in 1968, Morris was elected to the Independence City Council. He was re-elected and served two four-year terms. Morris was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Wood, and his brothers, Alvin (Mary Agnes) and Donnie (Janell). He is survived by his wife Reba, daughter Michelle (John), son Scott (Lea), his seven grandchildren: Brandon (Christa), Andrew (Lauren), Kyle, Hannah (Jaleel), Tyler, Tatiana (Gavin), and Tara, and five great-grandchildren: Simon, Henry, Elodie, Winnie, and Mycah.
