Myron Lee Garth passed away at the age of 89 on Friday evening, July 14, 2017 while being cared for at Kansas City Hospice House. Myron was born to Lucille and Merle Garth on June 5, 1929 in Emporia, KS. He attended Rosedale High in Kansas City, KS before enlisting in the Navy to serve in World War II. After his discharge, he married Catherine A. Mulvihill of Kansas City, MO on June 25, 1949. Myron followed the career path of his father in law John Mulvihill and embarked on a 36 year career with Southwestern Bell, retiring in 1984 from ATT. Myron and Catherine raised six children in south Kansas City where he was an active member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and later was a founding member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in 1967 and continued to be a parishioner there until his death. Myron volunteered often for the church and schools as a coach, with mechanical duties, landscaping, as a lector, and serving in the financial ministry as a money counter for 50 years. Myron was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and gardening; and was an avid supporter of many sports teams in Kansas City including O’Hara High School, the Chiefs, and the Royals. A common sight is Myron on his back patio at the grill or smoking a brisket while hosting a get together while family and friends filled the small house and backyard. His other social outlet was being an original member of the South Side Domino Club for over 60 years; including meeting with these close friends this past month. His passions led him to serve the community as a member of Knight’s of Columbus and the Serra Club of Kansas City. Myron can best be described as a man with a big personality who loved his family, church, and friends. He is survived by his 6 children; Rose Mary Garth of Indianapolis, IN; Mike and Therese Garth of North Platte, NE; Rita and Pat McGrath of Farmington, NM; Teresa Gutierrez of Overland Park, KS; Ann Garth of Overland Park, KS; Tom and Carole Garth of Kansas City, MO. His 12 Grandchildren; John and Rene Gutierrez, Dr. Timothy and Michelle Garth, Paul and Vanessa Gutierrez, Angela and Phil Demangone, Katie Garth, Robert and Tamara McGrath, Amanda McGrath, Danny Garth, Derek and Mallory Garth, Shane McGrath, Malcolm McGrath, Michelle McGrath, and his five great grandchildren. A visitation will be held Tuesday July 18, 2017 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church from 6-8 pm. A burial mass will be celebrated Wednesday July 19, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Matthew’s followed by a graveside burial at Mount Olivet.
