On February 11, 2020, accomplished business woman, philanthropist, world traveler, documentary film producer, photographer, amateur fishing champion and loving mother and grandmother, Nancy L. Seelen, 74, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away. Nancy was born on October 10, 1946 in Waxahachie, Texas to Willard and Ruby Childress. She is survived by her brother Sonny Childress, her son David Seelen, grandchild Ethan Seelen and soon to be step-grandchildren Livia Warren, Maddox Warren and Tatum Warren. All of whom she cared for deeply.
Nancy Seelen was a tremendous contributor to the development of Kansas City for most of her professional life. She developed a passion for improving Kansas City, and the lives of those who live and work here. She began her pursuit of this passion by redeveloping homes in Historic Hyde Park; from there she advanced her ideas, and helped lead the project to redevelop the Kansas City River Market. As executive director of the Kansas City River Market Development organization she laid the groundwork for what so many enjoy today. Nancy’s desire to improve Kansas City did not stop there, and as the executive director of the Kansas City Civic Council she continued to help transform KC for many years. It was this passion, drive and hard work that led Nancy to be honored as Kansas City Woman of the Year, and to her final professional role as the Vice President of Public Affairs for the Saint Luke’s Health System.
Nancy was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was a dear friend to many of those fortunate enough to have shared in her life. So many were touched by her spirit, generous nature and faithful guidance; far too many to name. She will be dearly missed, but she will never be forgotten.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday, February 21, 2020 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO 64145.
