Nellie was a lifelong stay at home mother after marrying the love of her life, John Schmidt in 1950. Together they had three children, Beverly, Johnny and Donna. They eventually made Kansas City Missouri their home.
Nellie was involved in the school PTA; she volunteered at Meals on Wheels at the Whatsoever Community Center in Kansas City. She was a member of TOPS where she loved playing cards and games with her friends.
Nellie was an avid card player. She loved playing “Shang Hi” with family and friends where there was known to be some competitive battles over the years filled with lot of laughs and good food.
She loved cooking. Nellie would always cook you a meal if you came over to see her. She was known for her famous tacos, beans and cornbread, egg noodles, deviled eggs, cornbread stuffing and homemade breakfasts every morning. On your birthday if you were special, you would be lucky enough to get her red velvet cake!
Nellie was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Kansas City for 68 years where she served as the secretary for many years. She loved her church family.
Nellie was an avid Royals and sports fan. She never missed a Royals game or any of her grandchildren’s baseball or other activities.
Nellie was preceded in death by her husband John A Schmidt (2011), her son John A Schmidt Jr and her daughter Beverly S Schmidt along with many other family members.
Survivors include her Daughter Donna Preston of Independence, her “adopted son” Mickey Schmidt of Kansas City, three grandsons Michael L Braden of Sugar Creek, Travis Schmidt (Laura) of Waukee Iowa and Shaun and Angelynn Warren of Blue Springs. Twelve great-grandchildren Christina, Cassandra, Michael R, Elizabeth, Emma, Peyton, Aubrey, Ella, Larissa, Taylor, Kyler and Alexa along with 12 great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will take place Monday, August 10, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home (7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133).
A funeral will occur Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM at Floral Hills Funeral Home (7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133).
A graveside will take place Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens (25203 E US Hwy 50, Lee's Summit, MO 64086).
We will conclude with a reception following the graveside Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Summit Park Church (425 SW Oldham Pkwy, Lee's Summit, MO 64081).
