Ota Marie Peoples, 81, Independence, Missouri, passed away June 13, 2016. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. followed by funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, June 20, at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Ota Marie was born February 19, 1935 in Cowell, Arkansas, first born child of Simon A. and Bessie (Pelham) Basinger. She had worked as a supervisor in the publishing industry. She was very artistic and creative. Ota loved crafts and traveled the Midwest demonstrating crafts and decorating. She loved the KC Chiefs, KC Royals, reading, and was an avid gardener.
She was active in the Ararat Shrine for many years, especially the Jackson County Shrine Club and Lady Provosts (former President).
She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Peoples, sister Ruby Basinger Roberts, and brother Billy Floyd Basinger. Ota is survived by her daughter Debra Peoples Horton; grandson Joshua Timm; sisters Regena Hefley, Janice Neighbors and Ellen Smith; brothers Jimmy Basinger and Bobby Basinger; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
