Paul Joseph Becka, 70, of Leawood, Kansas passed away on Friday, August 23, 2019.

Paul was born on January 24, 1949 in Lakewood, Ohio. He graduated from St. Edward High School in 1967 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 2018 for his athletic achievements. He graduated from the College of Wooster in 1971.

He made his career in sales as a manufacturer’s representative and co-owned a business, SBH & Associates. Paul retired in 2010.

He had wonderful friends, including a group of classmates from St. Edward. They call themselves the Tontine, and they gather every year for football and friendship.

Paul was a man of faith and prayer. He attended a Christ Renews His Parish (CHRP) retreat, prayed weekly in the Adoration chapel, and was an active member of the men’s group at his parish, St. Michael the Archangel. He gifted friends and family with crosses that he hand-painted.

Paul was a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns. He had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed hiking and skiing in the Colorado mountains, a well-made Manhattan with a good cigar, history books, and milk shakes with his grandchildren. He loved his beautiful wife, family, and friends most of all. In Paul’s words, he had a wonderful life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marion Becka. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Patty; two daughters, Kim (Joe) Wantschik and Krista Becka; three grandchildren, Paul, Alex, and Emilie; and two sisters, Diane McDonald (Loren Schepers) and Dorothy (Rick) Dudas.

Visitation beginning with the rosary will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, August 30, 2019 at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 14251 Nall Avenue, Leawood, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 31 at the church, with interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery and luncheon to follow in Father Porter Hall at St. Michael’s.

The family suggests donations be made in Paul’s name to the Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic or St. Edward High School. Floral tributes may be sent to the church.

I was very lucky to have Paul as a mentor early in my career in sales and spent many an hour in a car with him and his team, often through snow storms. He taught me about listening, treating people with dignity and respect. He was a calming, genuine influence on all he touched on how to do things the right way, and how to appreciate others. A very genuine mid-westerner's way. I gained a quick appreciation and admiration for him and the people he touched in so many quiet and thoughtful ways. A gentleman in every respect.

After Paul passed, his beloved Patty spoke so lovingly and so eloquently of her husband and partner as "That beautiful man."

How lucky we all are to have known him, and Patty's brief description of this strong, powerful and kind person is right on the nose.

Some of us have known Paul since grade and high school. He was called "Varsity Paul", earning 10 letters in a high school with 1,600 young men - and that earned him entrance into our school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

But, there was so much more than Paul, the great athlete. In fact, as his physical abilities cruelly diminished, we all saw in a heightened sense what he made him so special to us all in the first place. He was a beautiful man.

He was a great partner to Patty and devoted and loving father to Kim and Krista, plus a grandparent we'd all want to be. He had such goodness and cheer. He was interesting and interested in all of us. We were blessed to have him in our lives.

This special and loyal friend will be deeply missed. But, we are all better for having known and spent time with this beautiful man.

Words can’t express my feelings for the loss of Paulie. We met many years ago as neighbors. We have many memories and he was the most sincere, patient, caring and loving person I’ve ever met. He was a great father to his daughters and grandkids. He loved Patty dearly. He would help anyone out. He loved his sports and was an avid fan of many sports. Paulie has always been there for me after my husband passed away. I could go on and on, with great memories and stories. Much love and prayers to Kimmie and her family, Krista, and my best friend Patty. All of my thoughts and prayers. Love, Pammy

Paul was a true gentleman. He was a great competitor. When I got in the rep business he was one of the first to welcome me. He will be missed.

My family fondly remembers Paul visiting me when I was in the hospital three years ago. My most vivid memory of Paul is how he reminded me of Christ’s suffering. His legacy for all of us will be his calm demeanor and smile to his final breath. God will take good care of you!
