Peter R. Clay, Sr., departed this life unexpectedly on April 9, 2022, of Raytown, Missouri. He was born January 26, 1938, in Vacherie, Louisiana, to Ira and Theresa George Clay where he received his education.
During his latter teenage years, he quickly realized that the New Orleans jazz district combined with the Mississippi Blues created the melodies that captured his heart. Listening to jazz greats and attending live jazz and blues sessions was one of his favorite pastimes. In his late twenties, he met and married JoAnna Grinstead in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 28, 1966 and from this union three children were created; Cynthia, Peter, and Theresa Clay of Kansas City, MO.
Additionally, he also enjoyed reading the National Geographic magazine so much so, he held on to each publication dating as far back as the early 1980's. Peter also had a love for classic cars but more importantly, the internal mechanisms under the hood that made the car engine work. This curiosity landed him a job at General Motors, where he eventually retired after a lengthy 36-years of service. He also enjoyed traveling, family gatherings, long walks and socializing with friends and family.
Those of you who knew our Dad in a more familiar setting knew that he had an affinity for a nice cold beer. He also enjoyed watching the Royals and Chiefs game with his son Peter Jr. It was during one of those many moments my brother recalled a cherished moment when our Dad and he would drink a cold beer together, my brother would think they were finished drinking beer and our Dad would say "Awww...you could have one more", in hindsight my brother shared that he is so thankful he always said "Ok Dad", Dad would respond in his usual way "thanks for coming to see me".
Peter is survived by his daughters; Cynthia and Theresa Clay (KCMO), his son; Peter Clay, Jr. (affectionately known as Shane), & wife Deidra Clay (NKCMO), and his only remaining sibling - his sister; Madeline Dixon (NYC), a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends. Peter was preceded in death by his parents; Ira and Theresa Clay, his brothers; Bobby, Harold, Isaac, Charles, Joseph, and George Clay, his sisters; Maria Edwards, Beatrice Bastain, and Florida Grow.
