Philip was born October 14, 1924 in Winston Salem, North Carolina to Warren and Dorothy Nonnemaker and shortly thereafter his family relocated to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He attended the Moravian College before serving our country during World War II in the South Pacific on a Landing Ship Medium (LSM). Upon returning to the US he worked at National Union. He married Marie Smith in March 1949 and two children, Judith Marie and Philip Eric, were born into their home. Throughout his life he worked in several locations as an electrical engineer, as well as other occupations, and eventually coming to work at Western Electric in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. After retiring, Marie and Phil opened PM Trains and Rocks in Raytown, MO where he enjoyed operating model trains, serving customers and talking trains.
Phil loved sail boating on Sunday afternoons at Lake Jacomo, building his model railroad layout and being active with other veterans of World War II. He was active in several organizations: the Missouri Amphibious Navy group of Springfield, Missouri, the LSM/LSMR Navy Association, VFW in Holden, Missouri, The Circus Model Railroaders of America and the Kansas City Southern Railroad Historical Society where he served on the KCS Holiday Express train for many years. He so enjoyed being a member of the Lone Jack Christian Church, where he could visit with Pastor Dr. Ann and share in the delicious cooking of the members.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie and his parents Warren and Dorothy. He is lovingly celebrated by his daughter, Judy Rehkop and husband Gary, Warrensburg, MO; son, Philip Nonnemaker and wife, Jeannie, Lee's Summit, MO; three grandchildren and their spouses, Philip Ryan (Julie), Jason (Kristen) and Elizabeth Nonnemaker; four great grandchildren, Harper, Owen, Claire, and Landon. He was a wonderful father and excelled at being a grandfather that provided countless memories for his grandchildren. Although Philip was an only child, he was honored to be loved by his wife’s many nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
