
On August 21, 2010, an exceptional individual, Philip D. “Doug” Reister, M.D. passed away at the age of 91. Following graduation from Michigan State University in Pharmacology, “Doug” entered into military service and was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army. He served in the European Theater and following battlefield commissions, reached the rank of Captain. During his combat service he received the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Croix d' Guerre medals for courageous and meritorious conduct in combat. After honorable discharge, Doug entered the School of Medicine at Washington University, St. Louis. Upon graduation, he began residency and interned in surgery at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. Dr. Reister moved to Kansas City with his family and joined the practice of Dr. Wallace Graham, including care of the family of President Truman. He then practiced general medicine, abdominal surgery and eventually served on the staff of Research Medical Center as a Trauma Surgeon. Doug was a compassionate physician and an advocate for both hospital staff and patients evoking the deep trust of all whom he served and served with him. Doug had a love of history, leading to an enthusiastic acquisition of knowledge which he willingly shared with all who were interested. He was an avid antique collector and a certified antique appraiser. He was a man of unmatched integrity who will be sorely missed as a teacher, friend, husband, father, grandfather and mentor. He was preceded in death by daughter, Margaret E. Reister, D.V.M. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Kim Reister, daughter Sheryl, son Brian Reister, D.V.M.and his wife Sadie, and granddaughters Heather Scott, Emily Reister, Anna Reister, and McKenzie Morey. Visitation will be held Saturday August 28th, All Saints Episcopal Church, 9201 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, Mo. from 4 to 5 p.m. with a memorial service at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Research Medical School of Nursing and Vitas Hospice.
