She was born in Windsor, Missouri in 1935 and was the only child of Harry & Fern Hall; known as “Sha-Sha and Gramma” to her only child, Karl Hall Koch. Together with Jewell and Virgil Tobaben, "Aunt Judy and Uncle Toby”, they were a tight-knit 3-generation family. In addition to being a dedicated and loving single-mom to her son and “Mom” to her daughter-in-law Cheryl Koch, she was “Grandma” to her grandchildren Dustin Koch and Bailey (Koch) McNees. She was also a very proud “Great-gramma" to Madison McNees.
A graduate of William Chrisman High School, Stephens College, and University of Missouri, Phyllis was well known for her love of teaching young people; especially in the 2nd Grade. She always made time for reading a children's book or having one read to her by a youngster. She also took great joy in hosting and feeding family as well as her son’s friends and was known as “Mom” by many throughout her life.
Later she found companionship and laughter again with the love of her life, Burline Willbanks. They shared a short 10 years as husband and wife before he died all too soon. They will be resting together once again in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Phyllis lived in Independence, MO most of her life and gave back to her community through involvement in Junior Service League, Hope House, Cancer Action, and volunteer teaching at Luff Elementary. Her family asks that she be remembered for her generous and caring nature rather than the sadness of her passing.
A graveside service will be held at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 BLUE RIDGE BLVD, KANSAS CITY, MO 64133, US, on May 5, 2026, from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
