Pleun was the first child born to the late Henry and Josena Schelling. He was born on December 5, 1931, in Sioux Center, Iowa. In his early years, Duke served in the United State Air Force during the Korean War. He married Carol Elma Van Den Berg May 3,1955. They began their married life and started their family in Artesia, CA, later moving to Bakersfield, CA, relocating several times including: Jerome, ID; San Antonio, TX, Canyon Lake, TX and most recently Gladstone, MO.
Duke was a man of many trades: He was a dairyman, truck driver, and mailman, but of all these ways to provide for his family he was most passionate about his love for Jesus and how he spent his spare time. From the time that God changed his life until his last breath, Duke was all about sharing his faith in Jesus Christ with those around him. He taught Sunday school, drove a church bus to pick up children for Sunday School and mentored young men to live their lives for Jesus. He had a deep love for God's Word and spent many early mornings reading his Bible.
He loved to share stories of his many life adventures and the people that he met along the way. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren and he was quite willing to share with others their many accomplishments.
Duke is preceded in death by 2 children: Nancy Schelling and Curtis Schelling and is survived by: Carol Schelling, his wife of 59 years; brothers, Kenneth Schelling, Adrian Schelling, sisters, Marie Van Dyke, and Annie Bethke, children, Judith Baier, Gregory Schelling, Karen Bird, Deborah Vidal, Douglas Schelling, and Josena Marshall, 21 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
