Reed F. Murphy Jr., 82, formerly of Overland Park, KS passed away Monday, April 25, 2011. Reed was born November 19, 1928, in Chicago, IL, to Reed F. and Audrey Murphy. He grew up in Cincinnati, OH, where he graduated from Xavier University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. After graduation he served three years in the United States Coast Guard. Reed married Carole Quinn on October 23, 1954. Together they have four sons, and one daughter.
He went to work with his Uncle and Cousins in the Ohio River tug boat business. He later succeeded his father as a Lincoln Mercury car dealer in Covington, KY. In 1968 he relocated his family to Leawood, KS, where he worked for Kenworth Truck Company. In 1975 Reed and Ken Hoffman formed Ozark Kenworth, Inc., in Springfield, MO. The company continued to grow, and today is known as Murphy-Hoffman Company (MHC). The company has received numerous awards and industry recognition. Upon completion of college, each of Reed's four sons has continued to work in the family business. Reed always stayed busy with hobbies, boating and fishing. He loved to spend time with friends and family on the water.
Reed was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Carole Murphy; children and their spouses, Tim and Elin, Reed and Martha, Mike and Theresa, Jeff and Michelle, Maureen and Mike Bukaty; eighteen grandchildren and a great- granddaughter.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 29, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 14201 Nall, Leawood, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to the Catholic Education Foundation, 12615 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, KS 66109, or www.cefks.org.
