

Gary Reid Teaney, 77 peacefully passed away on June 18th, 2024. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 20, 1946, the first son of Milford and Dorothy Teaney, now both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Stuart Teaney on December 15, 2011. Reid married his beloved wife Barbara in June of 1976. Reid lovingly referred to his wife as “Mean.” He and Barbara enjoyed traveling together and spending time with family and close friends. Reid and Barbara have a daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Teaney Krull (Matt), of Kansas City, Missouri. Reid also leaves behind a stepson, Tim Green and his wife, Jill, of Lee's Summit, Missouri. Reid has two granddaughters, Kathryn Reid Krull and Emily Elizabeth Krull, and two grandsons, Jackson Allen Green and Matthew David Krull, Jr. The grandchildren and many of their friends referred to Reid as “Hops.” Reid also leaves his sister, Martha Cornwell and his niece, Maggie McGilley of Leawood, Kansas.
Reid attended Raytown High School and was in the first graduating class of Raytown South High School in 1964. He went on to continue his education at The University of Missouri, Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, major in Economics, from the Business School and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Reid was a proud member of the Zeta Phi Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at the University of Missouri. Reid loved the Missouri Tigers! Upon completion of his education at Mizzou, Reid was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army Transportation Corp and served at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Upon return to civilian status, Reid joined Allstate Insurance Company working in Kansas City, Chicago, Milwaukee and then returning to Kansas City as a Division Personnel Manager in the Sales Division.
Reid joined Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate Services when the Kansas City office opened in 1977 and was a Top Five Producer as an Office Building Specialist. He later became Sales Manager, then relocated to open the St. Louis CB office in 1980, returning to manage the Kansas City CB office in 1983. He functioned as Senior Vice President and Executive Managing Officer until his departure in 1996.
Reid joined the J.C. Nichols Company as Senior Vice President in 1996 taking on responsibility for all management, leasing, acquisitions and dispositions for the firm until Highwoods Properties acquired the J.C. Nichols Company, and his departure in 2000. Cohen Esrey Real Estate Services recruited Reid to their firm where he functioned as Senior Vice President responsible for all brokerage functions until he formed Cohen Esrey - Investment & Corporate Solutions Group with three partners at Cohen Esrey. He left Cohen Esrey in 2005.
Reid joined First Scout Realty Advisors as Executive Vice President in late 2005, where he established the investment specialty for the exclusive tenant rep and investment advisory firm. He left First Scout Realty Advisors in 2008.
The balance of Reid’s commercial real estate career was spent as Senior Vice President of Apartment Realty Advisors in Kansas City, and as Managing Director when the firm was acquired by Newmark, Grubb, Knight Frank. He was involved in institutional and private investor sales of apartment investment assets. He was quietly and consistently one of the top investment producers in the Kansas City market, and was active in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska apartment investment sales.
Perhaps the most satisfying accomplishments Reid enjoyed were the great success stories of the many young people he brought into the commercial real estate business. He took great pride in seeing the people that he recruited and managed succeed, and many of the top producers and principals in Kansas City commercial real estate firms today are a product of his efforts.
In 1997, he was appointed by then Governor Bill Graves to serve on the Kansas Real Estate Commission. Reid served eight years in the service of the state and his industry, twice appointed Chairman of the Commission during his tenure. He also served as Chairman of the Commercial Division of the Kansas City Regional Assn. of Realtors, Secretary Treasurer of the Western Missouri Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors. He served on the Board of Directors of the KCRAR and was named Realtor of the Year in 2004. Reid was a member of the Certified Commercial Investment Member Chapter and held the SIOR designation. He was a recipient of the SIOR National Award for the largest Office Transaction in 1999 and the Kansas City CCIM Chapter Home Run Deal Award for the largest Investment Transaction in 2007. Reid was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of The March of Dimes Birth Defect Foundation where he twice chaired Walk America and helped found the Bikers for Babies benefit motorcycle ride in Kansas City. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Ear Institute, a former member of the Advisory Committee of the Economic Development Corp. of Greater Kansas City and was an Alumni of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Centurions Leadership program. Reid was a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy in 2014 and was active in the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association.
Reid was an incredibly faithful husband, father, grandparent and friend. He was a man of great integrity and honor. His overall presence, personality and work ethic were unmatched. Reid was always a man of his word and took great pride in anything that he did. The grandchildren often said that Hops could fix anything. Reid loved nothing more than spending time working in the yard on a beautiful day and sitting on his beloved screened in porch. He also enjoyed sitting on a chair in the driveway just visiting with neighbors. Reid loved being at Lake Lotawana with his family and friends. Reid was an amazingly supportive grandparent who attended countless sporting events to watch his grandchildren. He loved preparing for the holidays, whether that was putting up Christmas decorations, cooking or wrapping presents.
A Celebration of Life for Reid will take place on his birthday at Visitation Catholic Church, located at 5141 Main Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112 on July 20th at 1:00 pm. All adults are welcome afterwards for a reception in Reid's honor at Mission Hills Country Club, located at 5400 Mission Drive, Mission Hills, Kansas 66208.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Cancer Society or the Saint Luke's Hospice House.
