Richard Barclay Roeder

Dick was born in Chicago, IL on December 16th, 1932. He was a 1955 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he played basketball and baseball, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served in the Armed Forces in Germany in 1957-1959.

Dick spent 40 years in the investment business in Chicago, IL; Cedar Rapids, IA; and Indian Wells, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester Roeder and Helen Barclay Roeder; and his brother, Don Roeder.

He was married to his wife Kathy in Cedar Rapids in 1984. She survives him as well as his daughter Shelley (Andrew) Fletcher of Evergreen, CO; son Kenton Barclay (Jill) Roeder of Cedar Rapids, IA; stepsons Chris (Deb) Schneider of Prairie Village, KS and Andrew Schneider of Westwood, KS; a sister, Ann Platt (John) of Elk Grove, CA. He was known as “Bopp” to grandsons Roe, (who was named after him), Reilly and Carson; and was Grampy to Bennet, Sage, Zach, Sam and Will. He loved spending time watching his grandchildrens’ sporting events and spent many hours doing so on the lacrosse field, basketball and tennis courts.

Dick loved all sports and excelled in handball, tennis and golf; he also coached many youth sports activities, inspiring his son to do the same. Dick was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan. He was highly ranked in state tennis and golf events throughout Iowa and won numerous tournaments throughout his career.

Dick was a former member and board member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club, the Cedar Rapids YMCA and Rotary, and a founding member of the Hawkeye Rebounders. He was an original member as well as board member of PGA West Golf Club in La Quinta, CA, and a long time member of the ratings committee of the Southern California Golf Association. Over his lifetime he contributed to numerous other community organizations.

Memorial contributions may be made to any local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or the Kansas City Hospice.
