Richard M Schulte was born on March 12, 1953 to Donald Patrick and Mary Margaret Schulte in Kansas City. He was the only boy in the family with three sisters: Kathryn, Heather, and Diane. Dick grew up swimming, lifeguarding, and teaching swim lessons at Holiday Swim Club. He also competed on the swim team with his specialty being the butterfly stroke. In high school Dick loved participating in the school plays. He wasn’t the lead, but was always a key player in the success of the play. After high school, he joined the Navy and found himself stationed on Midway Island during the Vietnam War, arriving on his 21st birthday. He quickly made the most of this assignment and became the swimming instructor for dependent children and bartender for the officer’s club.
When returning to KC, Dick began bartending at the Strawberry Patch in Ward Parkway shopping center. His charm and out-going personality made him a favorite of the customers. He later moved to managing Blayney’s of Westport and continued to bartend even after buying the club. He had a very successful business for 28 years, booking bands and giving many local musicians their start in the business. He has been described by many as a local legend. There were many customers who became life-long friends. He also gave back to the community by hosting fundraisers such as the SIDS Benefit he ran for 20 years. In addition, he was an active member of the Kansas City Blues Society.
Family was very important to Dick. He treasured his role as a father to his two sons, Willie and Robert. He was especially close to his much younger sister, Heather, and was a great role model for her. He also was an endearing step-father to Susie’s two children, Brett and Rachel. But the family member that recently lit up his life was the grandson, JQ “Turbo”. Although, Dick was only married to his wife, Susie, for 6 short years, they were years full of love and laughter. Very happy times!
Dick certainly touched many lives. He never met a stranger and was generous and thoughtful. He loved to tell stories and jokes. He had the most contagious, hearty laugh and used it frequently. He loved to entertain and cook. And he had a positive attitude his entire life, finding the good in everyone and every situation.
Dick was diagnosed with breast cancer when he was 41, and fought it courageously with everything he had for 22 years. On October 26, Richard M. Schulte passed away peacefully at the age of 63.
He is preceded in death by his son, Willie, and his parents, Donald and Mary Margaret Schulte. He is survived by his wife Susie, son Robert, sisters Heather Schulte, Kathryn Wyant, Diane Weaver, step children Brett & Brittany Austin, Rachel & Quentin Robinson, and one very special grandson JQ “Turbo” Robinson.
Visitation is on 10/30 from 2 – 6pm. Memorial service and graveside military honors begin at 9am on 10/31. Both will be at Mount Moriah Funeral Home, 10507 Homes Road, KC, MO.
