Richard was born on September 20, 1933 in Windsor, Missouri to Herbert and Gladys (Moore) Sims. He enlisted in the Army in November of 1953 and served in the Korean War. Around that time, he also wed Olivia “Libby” Chaney and they were married for over 60 years.
Richard was incredibly friendly and enjoyed being around people. He seemed to make friends wherever he went. He took great pride in his work in dairy service, but his true passion was his hobbies, which he had plenty of time for after retiring in December of 1999. Richard was an avid and skilled gardener who lovingly tended to his tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, and other produce. Often, he would plant specific vegetables that he knew his family particularly enjoyed. He cherished his time spent in the garden with his granddaughters during the summers. Richard also had a great love of mowing not only his own lawn, but any lawn that needed a fresh cut. For years after his retirement, he traveled all over the greater Kansas City area in both Missouri and Kansas and mowed lawns. His love of gardening and helping his community was deep and unwavering.
Richard was preceded in death by parents Herbert and Gladys Sims, wife Olivia Sims, and brother Clifford Sims.
He is survived by son Michael Sims (Chris), granddaughters Laura Homan (Zach) and Aimee Furrell (Jordan), and great-grandchildren Jaxon, Junie, Olivia, Grayson, Noah, and Jones.
