The Score:  Giant Zero and Baby One

No one would watch little Mary Kathryn because she would frequently stop breathing during her sleep cycle and need immediate resuscitation.  Linda, a Respiratory Therapist at St. Joseph's Hospital and Mary Kathryn's Godmother, volunteered to watch her for a weekend so I could get some sleep.  

Everything went well except Linda had not had a shower for a couple of days.  So after feeding Mary Kathryn, she laid her in the crib and asked Dick to keep an eye on her for 10-15 minutes or so.  Dick, knowing Mary Kathryn's history (a preemie weighing one pound, nine ounces), must have sat in the chair, never blinking and totally focused on watching the rise and fall of her chest with each breath. 

Mary Kathryn started squawking and I am here to tell you that she was an impressive squawker with a great set of lungs.  Dick tried talking to her, giving her a pacifier but neither worked.  

Dick, analyzing the situation figured that if he held her the way Linda does, then she would stop crying.  Standing 67 over her crib, he scooped her up his full height in a split second and scare her to death.

No more squawking, no more screaming.  Mary Kathryn was in a full out and out ear-piercing screeching bloody murder.  Dick was in a panic and holding her at the end of his fully outstretched arms, RAN down the long hallway to the master bathroom, yanked open the shower door and handed Mary Kathryn to a soapy Linda.  

Dick quickly closed Mary Kathryn in the shower with Linda, closed the bathroom door, closed the bedroom door, got an ice cold beer, and sucked it down in seconds as he struggled to steady his nerves.

Dick's passing has left a hole in Linda's heart that will never go away.  They loved each other so much and did everything together.  Their love story, filled with equal amounts of rocky roads and magnificent moments of tenderness, is an example of what is possible when two people not only love each other, but also know how to forgive each other's shortcomings.  

We love you, Linda.

I'm so glad to have known Dick.  He was a great guy with a big heart.  He will be missed by all.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My condolences to Dick's family. Dick was a fine business colleague and friend. I'll miss him a lot.

No words can adequately express Kathy and I's sorrow in Dick's passing. There are many fond memories of the Borg Warner days. May you rest in peace.

Dick was a tough competitor and great teammate on the Washburn Football team many years ago.  Our prayers are with Dick and his family.

Rest in peace my friend.  You left us too soon.

You will be remembered and toasted on our next trip to the Florida Keys!

Only met Dick a few times when I was with Borg Warner Acceptance in Oregon and Montana. He was a very professional, honorable and dedicated man. Back then BWAC was like one big family so please accept my condolences.
