Rita Ann Horton

Rita Ann Horton, 87, of Raymore, Missouri, passed away on July 29, 2026. Born March 7, 1939, in Iuka, Mississippi, Rita carried forward a life marked by steadfast devotion, hard work, and a kind-hearted spirit—qualities that remained evident in the way she loved, served, and showed up for others throughout her years.

Rita’s early years began in Iuka, where she attended grade school. She later moved to Kent, Washington, where she completed junior high and high school, graduating with the Class of 1957 from Kent Meridian High School.

In 1960, she met “Sunny” while he played the drums at “Corky’s Pit.” They were married the following year on December 14, 1961. Together they welcomed their one and only son, Keith—described with pride as a loving, adventure-seeking thrill seeker—whom they followed on his adventures to Kansas City, Missouri. In that journey, and in countless ordinary days along the way, Rita’s fierce determination and deep love were never far from the surface.

A woman of faith, Rita regularly attended church and drew strength from her beliefs. She brought warmth and celebration into everyday life, especially during the holidays, when she decorated lavishly throughout the home. She also loved dancing and even competed in dance competitions, carrying herself with a bold spirit and an unmistakable zest for life. In her youth, she modeled for a few years alongside her twin sister, Nan.

Rita was known for speaking plainly—having “no filter” and calling it like she saw it—yet that candor lived alongside a generous heart. She was welcoming and opened her home to many, offering a steady presence that was both spirited and sincere. Her legacy is one of devotion, industrious care, and a love that made room for others.

Visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131, on August 3, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Rita will be laid to rest at Mount Moriah Cemetery South.
