

Rita Vargas, 66 passed away March 19, 2015 with her family by her side. She was born December 8, 1948, the youngest of Aurelia and Hipolito Vargas’ 15 children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters Inez Vargas, Hope Crogan, Josephine Zlateff, Refugio Vargas and her brother Benjamin Vargas. She is survived by her sisters and brothers Elvira Gonzales (Robert), Lupe Sanchez, Mary Sanchez (Larry), Celia Jones, Irene Gibbs (Fred), Connie Shoffner, Richard Vargas (Roberta), Gabriel Vargas (Irene) and Robert Vargas.
Rita was a lifelong resident of the Northeast Kansas City area. She attended St. Francis Seraph School, Northeast High School and Kansas City Business College. She spent over 30 years in the transportation field, employed by American Cab Services, ITT School Bus Services, R.W. Harmon and Sons, Mayflower Contract Services, the Kansas City Missouri School District and TransPar Group.
Though she did not have children of her own, she was considered a parent by many of her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed attending and supporting their many activities and took every opportunity to do so. She faithfully attended the Step Up for Downs Syndrome Walk, supporting the “Andrew’s Amigos” group, for the past 10 years.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 AM at St. Anthony’s Church, 318 Benton, Kansas City, MO on Saturday, March 28, followed by a Memorial Mass at 11:00 AM. The family asks that donations be made in Rita’s name to the National Kidney Foundation (913.262.1551) in lieu of flowers.
The Vargas family would like to thank the staff at North Kansas City Hospital and KU Medical Center for their compassionate care of Rita during her extended stays at their facilities.
