Robert Nelson Swearingen

My Dad, Robert Nelson Swearingen, was born June 3rd, 1933 and grew up in the Waldo district, graduating from Paseo High School. He then worked several jobs until being drafted into the Army, where he served in Germany as a radio operator. After discharge, he returned home to care for his ailing mother which took most of his time. However, through mutual friends he was introduced one evening to my Mother and one year later, they were married at the Country Club Christian Church on September 14, 1957. On September 19, 1958, the young Swearingen couple added a daughter, me.

They lived in a small apartment in downtown Kansas City and then a house in Grandview before moving to Overland Park in 1963. During this time, my Dad worked as a Supervisor for Avon before moving to a Supervisory position with TWA where he worked for several years. This position had several perks, one of which was stand-by airline tickets which provided many of our wonderful family vacations. One of my favorite trips was to Acapulco and Toxico, Mexico.

Another great memory of my parents came when they took me furniture shopping for my first apartment. My parents were very supportive of myself and Steve before and after our wedding.

In retirement, my parents kept busy with volunteering, running two antique booths and doing stained glass.

In 2009, my Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and between 2009 and 2018 when it claimed her life, my Dad cared for here at home. After her passing, Dad spent most of his time selling his antiques and working on several stained-glass projects, while caring for his three cats, Patches, Tiger and Taffy.

My Dad’s passing was unexpected, and he will be greatly missed.
