Mr. Ruben Lopez was born on September 4, 1960 in Manila, Philippines. Ruben was a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather whose life was defined by faith, service, and love. He shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with his best friend and wife, traveling together across the world to places like Greece, France, Mexico, and Italy. Their adventures and shared laughter reflected the deep bond and friendship they built over a lifetime.
As a father, Ruben was the steady presence his three daughters could always count on. Reliable under any circumstance, he was selfless and supportive, showing his love through his actions more than his words. He extended that same warmth to his sons-in-law, embracing them as his own and always ensuring his family felt cared for and protected.
Known affectionately as “Papa,” Ruben was a devoted grandfather who found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He loved watching them play softball, soccer, baseball, piano, and jiu-jitsu, often cheering from the sidelines with pride. Whether he was cooking their favorite spaghetti, planning little trips, or simply welcoming them into his home, Ruben cherished every moment he spent with them.
Ruben’s professional life reflected his compassion and commitment to helping others. He served as a nurse for nearly 30 years at the Kansas City VA Medical Center, where his kindness and humor brightened the lives of both patients and colleagues. As an ICU nurse, rapid response nurse, and leader of the hospital’s safe-patient handling initiative, Ruben dedicated himself to improving care and supporting those around him. His coworkers often said he brought light and positivity to even the most challenging days.
A man of deep faith, Ruben and his wife were active members of their church’s Health and Wellness Ministry. Together, they prayed the Rosary and novenas daily, living out their Catholic faith with quiet devotion and gratitude.
Ruben will be remembered for his quick wit, bright smile, and generous spirit. He had a gift for making people laugh, a heart for giving to those in need, and a lifelong love for Kansas City’s sports teams. To his family and friends, Ruben was not only a source of strength and joy but also an example of kindness, humility, and unwavering love.
He was preceded in death by his father José Lopez Senior and brother José Lopez Junior.
He is survived by his loving wife Adelaida Lopez, daughters; Marianne Lopez Rhodes (Dennis), Cecilia Santos (Mike), Lindsey Santos (Carlo), and grandchildren; Arielle, Abram, Auggie, Alex Rhodes, and Luca Santos.
