Ruth Willcox

March 6, 1941November 5, 2013

Ruth Miller Willcox, 72, passed away suddenly, yet peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Ruth was born in and spent the first part of her life in Flint, MI. She was a graduate from the University of Michigan. She moved to Cincinnati where she met Jim, the man who loved and cherished her for the next 45 years. Jim and Ruth had three daughters; Katie, Emily and Johanna. Jim was Ruth’s greatest love and her daughters, her greatest joy. Together, they moved from state to state with Jim’s job. Ruth settled her family in 6 different homes in the years that followed; making each one a home by her own hand. Her artful eye, talent with a paint brush, and excellent taste would later benefit her daughter’s home as well. Ruth was a wife and mother first, but her individual talents were many. She generously shared her time and her gifts with abundance; keeping new babies warm with her crocheted blankets, decorating homes and Christmas trees with her sewing, painting, quilting and award winning photography. Many lucky stray animals found their way to Ruth’s door. All of them blessed with her unconditional love. The animals of the desert that she watched and adored from her vistas in Tucson were a source of unending delight. Ruth had a special place in her heart for any four footed or winged creature. Ruth spent her last hours surrounded with love by her daughters and her husband; just as she would have wanted. She is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Katie and son-in-law Sean with their children Lucy, Abigail and Alex; daughter Emily and son-in-law Patrick with their children Donovan, Johanna and Ella Kate; and daughter Johanna and son-in-law Gary with their children Wyatt and Rex. It would be her wish to mention also her much loved dogs: Ebby and Spike. We celebrate her life and will miss her every day. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wayside Waifs, 3901 East 119th Street, Kansas City, MO 64137. A private service for the family will be held at a later date. Condolences may be left online at Arrangements, McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO.

Hi- I have just found this obituary, hope someone in the family reads it and gets back to me. My name is Lonee Hoffman (Valencia). I have spent years trying to find the most important teacher in my life, Ruth Ann Miller. From this picture, I think this may be your beloved mom, wife. The Ruth Miller I am looking for came from MI to Ca for one year (her first year) of teaching with her friend, Ruth Voelker. She taught 5th grade at Niles Elementary School, Fremont, CA. I lived on a ranch and was dropped off early every day. Miss Miller and I became very close. She was like an older, very beautiful sister. we stayed in touch for quite awhile, writing letters until I was in high school. She came up to the ranch and rode horses, had dinner, and I remember being so surprised to watch her drink a beer. I cared very much for her. She was so incredible. Beautiful inside and out. Reading this notice, has brought tears to my eyes because I really think that this is the beloved lady I have been looking for. Just had to reach out, hope someone sees this. It sounds like she had a wonderful life, filled with great people to love. The Ruth I'm looking for, also was an airlines stewardess for awhile, I think. If this is not the right person, I am so sorry to intrude into your private memories, but if this is my Ruth, hope you will get back to me., or Lonee Hoffman (facebook)

For Ruth's family- You don't know me, but I feel as though I know you from the Christmas letters. I met Ruth in teaching in Walled Lake, MI in 1965. We both boarded with the same lady, a fellow teacher, who took in other teachers on a temporary basis. We were both filling out the end of a year for 2 different teachers. Ruth went home to Flint every weekend, but I was from KY, a long way from home and knew no one but my fellow teachers and landlady. Ruth took me home with her on 2 occasions and introduced me to her neighbor whom I would marry the next year. We have been married for 47 years. She also taught me to play chess. I too became a quilter upon my retirement from teaching. I am so saddened to learn of Ruth Ann's death, and know that she will live on through you, her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren.

This is a beautiful story of Ruth's life. She made the Willcox home my "home away from home" during my college years and warmly welcomed my wife Lisa to our family years later. She will be missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. God Bless.
