She spent most of her early life in Indianapolis, until her family moved to Raytown when she was 16. After graduating from Raytown High School, Sandy completed nursing school, earning her title of Registered Nurse. Her patients loved her as she was a very hands-on nurse, spending as much time with each patient as possible. Her servant’s heart carried her through many years of nursing, finally retiring from The Medical Center of Independence, but working at multiple hospitals over the years.
Sandy’s dedication to working tirelessly as a nurse stemmed from her commitment to provide and care for her children. Her children were her world and she showed them that every day. Her family meant everything to her. In the little bit of spare time that Sandy had while she was still working, she enjoyed cross-stitching, needlepoint and puzzles. She was extremely proud of her Indian heritage, so a majority of her sewing was Indian related, which always adorned her house. Sandy also enjoyed sewing gifts for loved ones. She also never missed an episode of Days of our Lives or any ghost-hunting show out there! After retiring from the nursing career that she loved, she became an avid Royals and Chiefs fan, just like her mom, and with a little help from her kids! She thoroughly enjoyed traveling (especially cruises), country concerts and going to shows in Branson. Some of her most special moments were when she was able to travel with her children and with her aunt, whom she was extremely close to.
Sandy is survived by her children, Donald (Tina) Lawhead, Rebecca (Troy) Stanton, Debra (Charlie) Arnold, Larry (Nancy) Niederschulte and Melinda (Dom) Niederschulte; her brothers, Gerald (Melodie) Lawhead, Lee (Nancy) Lawhead and Tim Lawhead; her aunt, Elsie Trittipo, and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister-in-law, Lana Lawhead.
Family, friends and others whose lives Sandy touched are invited to Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home & Floral Hills Cemetery at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 23rd, 2021 to celebrate her life at a gravesite funeral. Lee and Neil Lawhead will be presiding. Please arrive between 10:15 and 10:30 and either pull up behind the cars in the circle drive or park in a spot at the funeral home and walk to the tent that is just to the southwest of the home. Feel free to bring chairs if you would like to sit during the service.
