Born in Kansas City on November 22, 1942, to Raymond Sherrill and Anna Louise Culp, Sherrill grew up at the corner of 39th and Warwick, where his father owned and operated Culp Printing & Stationery Co. From an early age, he was active in Scouting and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of the Class of Spring 1958. He was also a member of the Tribe of MicOSay, an honor camper organization within the Heart of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which recognizes leadership, service, and dedication to Scouting ideals. Sherrill was a member of the Church of the Resurrection. He graduated from Westport High School with the Class of 1960.
Sherrill proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, including active duty during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he continued his lifelong commitment to serving others by joining the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. His assignments included the Central Patrol Division, Metro Patrol Division and South Patrol Division. A member of the 1972 Academy class, Sherrill served with distinction for three decades and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1974 for his bravery and decisive actions during the Washington Hotel fire, exemplifying the courage and commitment that defined his service. In 1975, KMBZ and The Metropolitan Police Chiefs and Sheriffs Association awarded him the Gold Award for Valor, “for conspicuous bravery and heroism”. He retired in December 2001.
While Sherrill was very much the “officer type”, he was sweet, kind, and always willing to help. Sherrill will be remembered for his deep love and devotion to his family, quiet humor, and silly jokes. He loved spending time with family at the Lake of the Ozarks, playing card games, reading, and walking his “grand dog” around the Lakeview campus. He was not one to sit idly and always found a project or odd jobs to pass the time.
Sherrill was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mariann Culp, and half-sister Shirley Ferstal. He is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-three years, Jan Culp; and sons Mark Meads (Carol) and Brad Meads (Bethany). He was a proud grandfather to Matthew Meads, Allison Malmstrom (David), Michael Meads, and Mark Meads; great-grandchildren Kinsley and Beau Malmstrom.
Sherrill moved to Lakeview Village in Lenexa, KS, with his wife, Jan, in September of 2014. Later on, as he battled Alzheimer’s, he moved to Lakeview’s Care Center in May 2023. He was quite proud that he participated in Alzheimer research studies, and was supporting the someday cure during his life and after his death by their Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131, with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will immediately follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
