Shirley attended Immaculate Conception Academy and Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa, graduating in 1957. After teaching for one year, she married Dr. James H. Barloon in 1958. Jim and Shirley moved to the Kansas City area in 1960, where they raised their five children.
She was a devoted mother, and her love for her children was present in all that she did. She provided a guiding hand to her grateful children. In later years, she offered the same unfailing love as “Mimi” to her 14 grandchildren, who range in age from 5 to 30 years.
Shirley enjoyed art and served as a docent at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art for 20 years. She also loved to read and play bridge. A lively conversationalist and life-long learner, Shirley and Jim had a wide circle of friends from many walks of life.
Above all, Shirley was devoted to Jim, her husband of almost 60 years. She and Jim enjoyed summers at Lake Lotawana and, in their later years, winters in Florida and travels throughout the world. Their love and care for each other is an inspiration to all.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Art, Leo, Al, and Patrick; and sisters Helen, Mary and Theresa. Survivors include her husband Jim; brother Bill; children Bill (Linda) Barloon, Jim (Linda) Barloon, Marybeth (Natch) Angles, Belinda Toma, and Joe (Susan) Barloon; grandchildren Harper and Matilda Barloon; Connor and Miles Barloon; Erin (Jake), Steven, Bridget, Jennifer and Paul Angles; Katie and Ellie Toma; and Joe, Clare, and Timmy Barloon.
The visitation will be on Monday, February 19 at 9:00 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, located at 14251 Nall Avenue, Overland Park, KS. A luncheon will follow. Private interment will occur at a later date.
The family would especially like to thank KU Medical Center, Dr. Kyle Brownback, and the Kansas City Hospice House for their kind and compassionate care of Shirley in her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s name to the American Lung Association.
