Shirley Jane (Winterscheidt) Block, 87, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas. A memorial Mass will be held at noon Monday, May 6, at Church of the Nativity in Leawood. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Shirley was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Sabetha, Kansas, to Elmer and Savilla Winterscheidt. She grew up in Seneca, Kansas, and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Kansas State University, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
A horseracing enthusiast, Shirley was a fun, funny, loving person who inspired great devotion in her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, William E. Block, whom she cared for with unwavering compassion when he was struck with Alzheimer’s Disease; her parents; brothers Ken Winterscheidt and Gerald Winterscheidt; her sister, Bonnie Huerter; and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors include daughters Jayne Brungardt of Kansas City, Missouri, Joyce Wall of Overland Park; Jill Canon of Kansas City; and Jana Tiano of Azle, Texas; son, Jay Block of Grimes, Iowa; and 12 grandchildren. She was a proud great-grandmother to 10 children.
