Stephen Francis Fetterling passed away on Jan. 12, 2017. A visitation will be held at McGilley Antioch Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 18, 2017, and a celebration of life will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Parish at 11 a.m. on Jan. 19, 2017, with a reception following.
Stephen was born July 26, 1956 in Kansas City, Kan., to Elizabeth and Frank Fetterling. He grew up in Gladstone, Mo., and went to Oak Park High School. He and his good friend Dave Youtsey attended Arizona State University, where he worked his way through school and was a star member of the National Frisbee League (or so he claimed). Both of their fathers worked for TWA and, in between several flights to New York City, they eventually graduated.
Back in the Kansas City area, he began working as a pharmaceutical salesperson, receiving numerous awards throughout his career. In 1982, he married Susan Bowers, with which he had two vibrant and equally quirky children named Jessie and Peter Fetterling.
His great smile and ability to talk to anyone attracted an abundance of friends, which he kept for years. Buying food for the homeless or lending money to a friend in need were just a few examples of his extreme generosity. He was especially passionate about war history and helping veterans, which was apparent in his work with the Wounded Warrior Project.
Sports played a big role in his life. He was a long-time season ticket holder of the Kansas City Chiefs (no matter how many times they lost to the Broncos or Raiders). An avid golf fan, he had five holes-in-one. He was popular amongst his children’s friends, largely due to coaching their sports teams, driving them on cross-country road trips and his Larry David-esque quirks, which can be attributed to his love for Seinfeld. He enjoyed days on his boat at the Lake of the Ozarks and riding his Harley Davidson. It was during this time he had a meaningful relationship with Terry Westhoff.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Fetterling; his sister Ann Oehler (Steve Oehler); two children, Jessie and Peter Fetterling; and several nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Frank Fetterling, and his brother, Paul Fetterling. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Charles Borromeo Parish.
