
Tom was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Duckett and grew up in Hiawatha, Kansas. He was a Boy Scout achieving the rank of Eagle and was a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He attended Baker University and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. After graduating from Baker University with a major in chemistry, Tom attended the Kansas University Medical School graduating in 1967. Tom was a fourth-generation physician.
After an internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, Tom served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight surgeon stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska. Following his honorable discharge as a Capitan, Tom spent a year as a fellow at Vanderbilt University in the ophthalmology division studying retrolental fibroplasia. Following his fellowship he served a three-year residency there in ophthalmology.
Upon completion of his medical specialty education, Tom returned to Kansas City to start his ophthalmology practice in Overland Park, Kansas. After a 35-year professional career, which he shared with Dee W. Bell, MD, Tom retired to Broomfield, Colorado in 2012.
Having enjoyed his undergraduate years at Baker University, he was honored to serve as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. He also served as the President of the KC Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
In addition to his civic and professional service, Tom enjoyed golf, a challenging but pleasurable pastime shared with old and new friends from Kansas City to Florida to Colorado.
Preceded in death by his daughter, Lee Ann Duckett Bell, Tom leaves his loving wife of 53 years, Ann Clatworthy Duckett; his son, Thomas Jonathan Duckett, and his daughter-in-law, McKeough Carlin Duckett; their children and his beloved grandsons, Samuel and Nathan. He also leaves his son-in-law, Doug Bell, and his devoted sister Linda and her sons, his nephews, Sandy and John.
Private graveside services will be conducted at Mount Moriah Cemetery. A reception for friends will be held at Mount Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road from 3:00-5:00 PM on Saturday, June 10, 2017.
As a registered organ donor Tom was able to donate his eyes for research to the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank. Memorial gifts can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
