He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother Donald Wayne and his loving wife Karla Marie Eddy.

Thomas leaves behind two sisters who loved their brother dearly Verna and Mike Gilbert of Oklahoma and Sharon Sue and Danny Gilstrap of Texas.

He cherished his three children, son Thomas DeWayne Eddy, Sr. & wife Wendy of Vidor, TX, daughter LeaGina Ann Eddy and Steven Beaty of Leander, TX and son Denny DeWade Eddy and wife Jennifer of Kansas City, MO.

He was a loving grandfather to Buster, Brittany, Dylan, Madeline, Jessica and Billye Rae and great grandfather to Linzee, Brylann, Kai, Brandon, Levi, PJ and Tas. Their smiles matched his in so many ways.

He was a loving uncle to three nephews Chad, Scott and Shawn and four nieces Selena, Cindy, Susan and Stephanie whom cherished him just as much.

Thomas loved spending his days on the porch with his best four- legged friends Sadie, Ace and Little Bit and enjoyed the outdoors.

In 2003 his life forever changed and this is how he chose to respond: NextStep Kansas City is the result of Thomas’s desire to help other people living with spinal cord injuries hold onto hope for continued recovery. He knew this community needed a better option that allowed them to decide when their recovery efforts were complete. His passion, and never ending positivity, ensured this type of resource was available for the past 13 years. He volunteered his time and energy to this mission in an effort to maximize access and affordability for all. Thomas’s ultimate goal is for Kansas City to have a state-of-the-art Paralysis Recovery Center that can be accessed by anyone who wants it, regardless of their ability to pay for it, so they can focus on their long-term recovery and health goals.

Our families all grew up together, seven cousins, who could ever forget our memories. Denny being older, I will never forget him teaching Donny and I how to fish and be outdoors at Lake Tejas and Dam B. He will always have a place in my heart when I reflect back on those days of our youth. He was always so happy and pleasant when you were around him. I waited to long for that last visit. Why is life so short?

Thomas Eddy

You meet a lot of people in life but it is those who leave a lasting impression, that become part of your life, that you remember the most.

That’s Thomas Eddy.

Thomas’s positive attitude is what I will remember the most. He was a “cup is half full”, or completely full, persons. “Half empty cups” didn’t exist in Thomas’s life.

Thomas was also a strong person. How Thomas faced his challenges is beyond what I can imagine.

Often the question came to my mind; how would I handle such challenges? We never know until we are faced with such challenges, but I hope I could have half the strength that Thomas had facing his challenges.

And being faced with his challenges he created Next Step and helped other people facing their challenges.

Thomas had some “lemons” in his life, but he made “lemonade” and not only that, he shared the “lemonade” with others.

No matter how any of us have come to know Thomas, he will always be part of us.

Thomas, my friend, rest in peace and thank you for being in of my life.

I did not know Thomas personally, but through his thoughtfulness, Caring and generosity he helped many people like me in the spinal cord community not give up hope! I owe so much of my recovery to Thomas! Without Thomas there would be no NextStep. Thank you so much and your legend will live on through so many people. RIP and now you are walking with another hero Christoper Reeves!

Thomas was a good person. I have always thought of him as still being my brother in law and my children still called him Uncle Thomas. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. I know he will be dearly missed.
