V-Je was from my mom's side of the family, with which my siblings and I had little contact until my dad died, when both of my cousins, V-Ge and Mike, drove out from the midwest to L.A. arriving just in time for Dad's memorial service.  After that we started seeing each other more often, and phoning each other, probably because we all knew we were growing older and our only guaranteed time to be with each other was right now.  I'm glad we did, not only because I could get to know my cousins better, in this case V-Je, but also because V-Je could tell us things about our aunts and our mom.  My mom was a big influence in V-Je's life, because she served as V-Je's sponsor in AA.  I actually had spent some time in V-Je's life before my dad died when I accompanied my mom out to spend a weekend with her, but all I remember was that they both smoked like chimneys--cough, cough--although I also recall that V-Je let her dog, a doberman I believe named Helen, sleep with her, which I thought was cool.  During one of our phone conversations, V-Je revealed that she was part Cherokee, which, although exotic by L.A. standards, was looked down on where V-Je was living.  You never know why people are the way they are until you start talking to them.  I also learned that V-Je had had a brief first marriage, and that the reason she left the military was that they would not promote her above l.c.  Those fleeting memories are now all that I have of her.

In any event, I am glad to have gotten to know her better before she died, and I am glad that now she rests in Jesus' arms, no longer in physical pain, which, in her life, had been substantial.

We will miss our midwest cousin - may she rest in peace.
