Victor (Vic) Josiah Miles, Jr. was born to Victor J. Miles, Sr. and Ethel Pollitt Miles on March 5, 1933 in Covington, Kentucky and passed from this earth at his home in Kingswood Senior Living Community on November 6, 2025. He lived a long and fruitful life, passing peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92, surrounded by his loving family.
Vic was raised in Cincinnati, but lived in many places around the country and in France during his 22 year career as an officer in the US Air Force. He also served a year in Vietnam. He graduated from Western Hills High School and from the University of Cincinnati where he was one of the first to participate in their newly established Co-op work/study program while earning his degree in Electrical Engineering.
After retiring from the Air Force at the rank of Major, he embarked on a new career as the Superintendent of Communications for the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department, a challenge that he enjoyed until his retirement at age 65. As one of his many responsibilities, he helped to implement the original 911 system for Kansas City.
Vic was active in Boy Scouting in his youth, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and continued as a leader in Scouting throughout his life, serving in roles such as Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, and Unit Commissioner, and as an Honorary Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as the President of the People to People program at Fort Leavenworth, and also as the President of Friends of Squaw Creek (now called Loess Bluffs).
Vic married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Keller, who accompanied him through many relocations throughout his military career before convincing him to finally settle in Kansas City.
Together they raised four children; Kathleen Daniel (Jerry), Brian Miles (Sandy), Jean Miles and Michael Miles (Alma), who brought them the joys of many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Some time after Carolyn’s untimely demise in 1990, Vic was blessed to be united with Ellen Works with whom he shared a happy and adventurous marriage until her passing in 2017. Ellen brought to his family her children; Linnaea Bowles (Gil), David Works (Marie) and John Works and several more grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Vic is survived by all his children and by his niece Ruthanne Bradley and nephew Don Keller (Patty).
In sincere appreciation for the love and kindness provided by the amazing staff at Kingswood during Vic’s later years, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Kingswood Senior Living Community Foundation.
