OBITUARY

Virgil Wayne Metcalf

March 29, 1958August 31, 2020

Virgil Wayne Metcalf, 62, KCMO died Aug 31, 2020. Memorial Service will be Wed, Sept 9 at 7pm, Visitation 6pm, at the McGilley Antioch Chapel, KCMO.

Virgil Wayne Metcalf was born on March 29, 1958 in Independence MO to Vera Mae Bodiford Metcalf and John Leon Metcalf. He was the youngest of 3 siblings.

In his younger years he attended secondary school in Independence MO and high school at Van Horn and Odessa High. While growing up Virgil enjoyed playing baseball while his dad coached. Virgil was a talented pitcher who was believed to be the next baseball All-star. In 1974 tragedy struck and his dad, John, suddenly passed away. After losing his lifelong coach and mentor, Virgil quit baseball and began working.

In 1980 he married Deb Dolsky (Canterbury) and in 1981 their daughter, Melissa Mae was born. She was immediately and always was a Daddy's girl. Virgil and Deb later divorced.

He had several odd jobs over the years such as being a city worker for the City of Oak Grove and City of Grain Valley. In 1988 he began working for Overnite Transportation, who later became UPS Freight. He started on the dock loading trailers and then eventually taught himself to drive a big truck and went and got his CDL. He began his career as a city driver for UPS Freight at that time.

During his time at UPS, Virgil experienced many happy life events such as the birth of his son, Johnathan Michael. John was the only child from the marriage of Virgil to Tammy Mitchell (Small). John is the spitting image of his dad and was his lifelong fishing buddy. Virgil and Tammy later divorced and he moved to the Kansas City North area where he lived out the rest of his years.

After 30 years at UPS, in 2017 he was finally able to tell UPS to kiss his ass and he retired to his camper at Truman lake. Hunting, fishing and spending time with family were his passions. He could always be found on the lake in his boat, or at his grandkids' events. Gavin James, Jayden Muriah, GracieAnn Marie, and Gabrielle Christine are 4 of the luckiest grandkids in the world.

He is survived by his daughter Melissa and Andrew (deceased) Glaspie, his son Johnathan Metcalf, his brothers Charles Metcalf and Chuck Ebert and sister Sue Barclay and his grand-children Gavin, Jayden and Gabrielle Giebler and GracieAnn Glaspie. He also has several nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his Dad, John in 1974, Mom, Vera in 2010 and son-in-law Andrew in 2020.

I write on behalf of Butch, Kathrine, Bob, Christina, Brett & Doug, his neighbors at the Lake. Virgil was a blessing when he moved into the “Neighborhood” as he was a great guy/fisherman/hunter to have and always the first to wave and have a chat. You’ll be missed!

Virgil from the day we lost our dad(your rock) I promised I would try my best to finish help mom raise you. You were a handful at times but I have always been proud of the man you became. Why did we have to say goodbye while you was still so young. Big Sis loves you and my heart will always hurt. See you on the other side .
