Virginia Mae (Como) Becchina passed away Sunday, March 29, 2020 at the tender age of 88. Virginia was born on February 17, 1932 to Leonardo and Josephine Como, the youngest of four children. She grew up in the Columbus Park area of Northeast Kansas City, near many cousins and lifelong friends. She married her sweetheart, “Sam” Salvatore Becchina, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1953, and they celebrated 52 loving years together before Sam preceded her in death. Together they raised six children: Joseph Becchina, Leonard (Bea) Becchina, Salvatore (Sherry) Becchina, Jr., Rosemarie (Paul) Dicus, Jo Carol Becchina, Virginia “Ginny” (Michael) Kary; all left with many cherished memories forever held in their hearts.
Virginia was a loving and devoted Grandmother (fondly known as “Ma”) to Shelly (Philip) Balthazor, Salvatore (Alicia) Becchina, Vincent Gatewood, Ryan Gatewood, Nicholas (Katherine) Becchina, Nicole Becchina, Megan (Chris) Uresti, Brittnee (Caleb) Pace, Matthew Dicus, Samantha Becchina, and Mikey Kary. She was also a loving and devoted Great-Grandma to Piper, Reese, and Salvatore Becchina and Theodore Pace.
Virginia dedicated her life to her family showering them with love, affection, and food. She cherished everyone and had a very kind and gentle soul. Everyone who entered her home was asked if they were hungry, and even if they said they were not, soon found themselves with a plate of food. The holidays were her favorite time of year, preparing many traditional Italian dishes, especially Italian cookies. With her mother and husband who was a talented baker, she hosted St. Joseph’s Day tables, in their home, in the 70’s. Her kids, grandkids, and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy. She loved going out to dinner with her kids and grandkids or just running errands with them. She never sat at home, always going along for the ride with whatever her family was doing. Virginia never felt the need to ride in an airplane, but eventually made her first plane trip to Chicago in 2008 for her grandson’s college graduation and then to California in 2010 going to Disneyland and seeing the ocean for the first time in her life. Virginia was also a devout Catholic and member of St. Francis Xavier Parrish. She rarely missed a mass, even if over recent years that meant watching mass on the television. Her rosary was always in her purse, unless it was found in her hands.
Her siblings, Vincent, Joseph “Ditto” and Congetta Parrino all preceded her in death. She leaves behind her sisters-in-law Antoinette Como and JoAnn (Mike) Bua, along with many, many loving nieces and nephews, and extended family.
She will live on in the hearts and actions of all who knew her, all souls she touched with her gentle, generous, and caring ways and the legacy of family she leaves behind.
