Walter (Jupe) Hastings, 87, Kansas City, Mo., passed away July 18, 2013, at the Veteran's Home in Cameron, Mo. Walter was born Feb 8, 1926, in Topeka, Kan., to Grace and Anson Hastings. The family lived in McFarland, Kan., where he graduated from Alma High School. Walt was stationed in Germany during World War II. Walt graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law and remained a diehard KU fan for life. He was employed by Farmers Insurance Group in Kansas City for 35 years. Walt married Irma Menkens in 1952 in Belleville, Kan. They lived in Kansas City where they had two sons, Kent and Greg. Walt managed several levels of amateur baseball, eventually managing in the Brooklyn Dodgers minor league system. He later coached many successful baseball teams in the Northland. He and Irma were avid golfers and played several of the nation's premier courses.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Irma and his sister, Velda. He is survived by his two sons, Greg (Nancy) and Kent (Karen); grandchildren, Haley, Gracie, Abby and Brent; sister-in-law, Judy Menkens; niece, Kris Dougherty and her family; and his dear friends, Chris Weishar and Dennis Webb.
