April 6, 1933 - September 13, 2025
Walter W. Howland, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion. Born in Frankfort, Kansas, on April 6, 1933, Walter lived a life full of purpose, generosity, and joy.
A graduate of Wichita North High School, Walter was drafted into the U.S. Army and served two years in El Paso, Texas. On September 6, 1954, he married LaVaughn, the love of his life, in Wichita. Their remarkable 71-year marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Walter earned his bachelor’s degree from Rockhurst College and built a distinguished career, rising to become Vice President of the Tax Division at Kansas City Southern Industries. He retired at age 60, having earned the respect and admiration of colleagues through his dedication and leadership.
He was a proud and loving father to five children: Sheryl (Joe) Medina of Lee’s Summit, MO; Janis (David) Lembke of Olathe, KS; Matt (Shawn) Howland of Troy, IL; Tracy (Pat) Peterson of Ridgecrest, CA; and Kristin Goetz of Pensacola, FL. His legacy continues through seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished deeply.
Walter was known for his vibrant social spirit and treasured time spent with family and friends. He was famous for his chocolate malts made with Blue Bell ice cream - a treat that became a family tradition. An avid golfer for many years, Walter remained active well into his later years, even joining a swim team in his 80s. His great sense of humor, love of storytelling, and infectious laughter made him the heart of every gathering.
Walter made homes in Kansas City, Leawood, KS; Palm Desert, CA; Tucson, AZ; and Overland Park, KS - leaving behind a trail of friendships and fond memories wherever he went.
Over the years, he found great joy in traveling - especially the family vacations to Wyoming and the Lake of the Ozarks when the kids were young, followed by fun trips with the whole family to Holiday Island in Eureka Springs, Arkansas; the breathtaking shores of Kauai, Hawaii; and a memorable celebration of their 50th anniversary in Las Vegas.
He often said, “family is everything,” and he lived that truth every day. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love will be deeply missed, and the memories he created will be cherished forever.
Services will be held on Friday, September 19 at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, MO.
